Metro East Lutheran HS – June 22
Metro-East Lutheran High School daily report
Saturday, June 20 – We arrived at SCORE headquarters at about 9:30 or 10 p.m. (Costa Rica time, which is the same as Mountain Time). We had some food, an orientation meeting, and then we went to bed.
Sunday, June 21 – We went to church and the service lasted about 2 hours. Even though the students aren’t used to church being quite so lengthy, they enjoyed the sermon and we all felt very welcome. It was Father’s Day in Costa Rica as well, so all the fathers were recognized and we were served a traditional Costa Rican meal after the service.
After church we went to an orphanage with kids of all ages. We sang with the kids, played soccer, tag, played with playdough and enjoyed their company. We left several Christian books in Spanish for them as well as coloring books, bracelets, and some clothing. To close the day we began our Bible study series “Receive as Gift” and sang some more songs as a group.
Monday, June 22 – Fifteen of us woke up at 5:15 to go running at the local university. After running, showers, and breakfast we set off for our first activity of the day – VBS. We went to two different schools and did various activities with the students. We colored in Christian coloring books, painted the kids’ faces, sang about Jesus with them, and shared the Gospel message with them using bracelets we brought and the colors they represented. We also donated more Christian Spanish books to the schools.
We returned to the SCORE villa for lunch, after which we went to downtown San Jose to distribute tracts telling the Gospel message. We folded and stamped 2,000 of them and passed almost all of them out.
At times it was discouraging when people refused to take them, but we were all happy when we saw so many people reading about God after handing them the tracts. On our way back to the Villa, we stopped at the grocery store and bought supplies to feed the hungry. We went back to the Villa to assemble the sandwhiches, cookies, and juice so we could distribute them after supper. With the free hour we had before supper, we tried several exotic fruits and vegetables that we bought at the grocery store including tamarinds, guavas, papaya, mango, and pejibaye.
After supper, we went back to San Jose to distribute the food to the homeless. This was a somewhat frightening task as it was dark and the people who came to get the food sometimes appeared to be under the influence of something and a little questionable. However, we were glad to share with these people and help them as best we could.
We returned to the Villa to continue our Receive as Gift Bible study, have some relax time, and then go to bed for another full day tomorrow.
