An Eye-Opening Experience (Bethel Baptist)

March 27, 2008

We departed from SCORE at 8:30 a.m. and headed for Carpio. We went to the Christ for the City clinic where we met with Megan. Dr. Buckingham and the two nurses, Missy and Becky, worked in the clinic all day. The remaining seven members of our group went on a tour of the Christ for the City mission. I can’t remember the director’s name, but he gave us a great tour of the facility and shared his vision. I was impressed with the work already accomplished with such limited financial support. I admire the love and concern he has for his people and the children of Carpio.

After talking with him, I felt the problems he has to overcome and the same problems we face in the US are quite similar, just on a lower financial plane. We are all God’s people, facing the same problems. Thank God someone loved us enough to share Jesus with us. We pray we will have the same opportunity to share Jesus with the people of San Jose. I pray his vision will be accomplished.

We continued to travel with Megan to the mission education building. We had our lunch there and toured that facility. Again, I was impressed with how much is being accomplished with limited resources.

We were invited to go to the clinic and sort medical supplies she had on hand which would aid the medical team in the future. We spent the afternoon there and had a great time. We felt we were being used in a good way.

Overall, it was a very eye-opening experience. The physical conditions the people in Carpio live in seem unbelievable to me. The constant stream of trucks going to the dump and city buses on their routes was deafening as well as depressing. To live in such conditions seems unbearable. We enjoyed the work, but were glad to return to SCORE for some rest.

The staff at SCORE are the nicest, most humble Christian people I’ve met in a long time. Your selection of staff members is incredible. They are all very nice and always wanting to make us comfortable.

Thank you for your vision here in Costa Rica. I pray God with continue to bless and add more physical and spiritual growth.
