Over 160 men met in Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic, in November 2007, to talk baseball and Jesus. The men who attended SCORE’s Baseball Outreach carried different titles: professional athlete, father, businessman, student. But all were unified by their purpose–to coach kids, share Christ, and worship God.

“Most have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Tampa pastor Ken Whitten about the Dominican people. “Their ticket out of here is baseball. So we’re going to bring them their ticket so we can earn the opportunity to share the greatest gift.” The outreach has a twofold purpose: mass evangelism and spiritual renewal. Everyone gathers in the mornings and evenings to worship God and study His Word.

“For the laymen who attend, it’s fun because they get to hobnob with professional baseball players,” commented Trey Bailey who has attended the baseball outreach all four years. “For the Major League players it’s fun because they can give back and teach.”

This year, SCORE will hold the event at Barcelo Capella in Juan Dolio. For four days, the men will teach baseball and hold clinics in the morning. After lunch, men may opt to minister in orphanages and sugarcane villages or spend time with their wives on the beach or sightseeing.

“If you go down and you don’t like it, I’ll give you your money back,” says John Zeller, Executive Vice President of SCORE. “It’s more than a baseball missions trip. It’s a Bible conference and a men’s meeting where guys get to talk and share burdens with each other.”
