SCORE Guy’s Basketball - Monday

Today was our first day to settle into a routine. Since our last entry we have transported our bags from the Embassy Suite Hotel to the SCORE hotel.  We left the hotel a little after nine after we got done eating breakfast.  We traveled on the crazy Dominican roads across town. In fact, we saw a local riding/laying on his motorcycle superman style weaving through oncoming traffic for attention.  We arrived at a covered basketball court with wooden floor.  Rick shared his testimony at half time to a crowd from the town, and afterwards Denny Polanco, our SCORE missionary who also translated, shared the gospel to them.   Later we learned that four or five of them had prayed the Salvation prayer and it was the first time for many others to hear about Christianity.  Then we finished the game playing a successful 2-3 zone and ended up winning 68-47.  It was a well played game from both sides and evenly distributed scoring. Also the game was refereed surprisingly fairly and there was good sportsmanship after the game.  After the game, we returned to the hotel to take a swim and eat lunch.

After lunch, we went to the sugar cane village.  We pulled in off a dirt road into a poverty stricken village, honked the car, and waited for the Dominican children to come running.  We started off by giving countless piggy-back rides and tossing around the football.  Afterwards, we began a long game of pick-up baseball.  The game was topped off with a slide into third base by Kyle Woolsey.  All the Dominicans went crazy.  But the best part was when Kyle gave his testimony and Denny presented the gospel to an open group of Dominicans.  Many were saved and it was the first time for most to hear anything about the Gospel.  Then, we handed out T-shirts, shorts, hats, and jerseys we had brought to hand out to them.  We returned hot and tired and we were excited to see some chicken alfredo.  We also plan to go tarantula hunting tonight and get some good ice cream from a local restaurant and head to bed after devotions.
